FLY FISHING – CHILE, TIERRA DEL FUEGO
Fantastic fly fishing for seatrout, brown trout and rainbow trout in Chile, Tierra del Fuego. You can fly fish for sea run brown trout, brown trout and rainbow trout on the rivers and lakes of Tierra del Fuego. TIERRA DEL FUEGO
Tierra del Fuego – literally Fire Land and also known as Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego – is an island near the southern tip of South America from which it is separated by the Strait of Magellan. The western portion of the island is in Chile, while the eastern portion is in Argentina. The island has an area of 47,992 km2, making it the 29th largest island in the world. Its two biggest towns are Ushuaia and Río Grande, both in Argentina, while its highest point is Monte Darwin (2,488 m), in Chile. The landscape of Tierra del Fuego is a sparsely populated wilderness. Large sheep farming estancias share this land with wild guanacos, grey foxes, beavers and condors.
For the first day of the week fly fishing will be done at private beat on the Rio Grande river. The Rio Grande is a medium size, 10-20 m wide river, with gentle gradients and easily waded, gravel-bottom pools. The pools can be covered adequately with a Switch or a single-handed rod. Pools are varied and interesting with traditional runs, undercut banks and meanders. The lodge in Tierra del Fuego offers 50 km of double bank fishing on the Rio Grande and 15 km of double bank fishing on Rio Azopardo. The Rio Azopardo is a 15 km long river that runs into the Ocean from the Fagnano Lake. One full day guests will fly fish on the Despreciado Lake, located about 40 minutes south from the lodge. It is a beautiful small lake full of brown trout around 3 kg.
Next day will be spent on Laguna del Cura and Laguna del Carabinero lakes located close to the lodge (30 minutes). You can catch about 20 nice rainbow trout and brown trout around 2 kg each. Last day we will fish on the Desaeado Lake and return in the afternoon to fish for brown trout in the Despreciado Lake. Maximum number of rods is 6 fishing these trips and there is one local fishing guide per 3 fly fishermen. Fishing guide will take you by car to the rivers and lakes and show where to cast. They know the fishing places like their own hands and their english is adequate. Single hand rods are recommended in Tierra del Fuego (AFTM class 6-8, rod length 9′-10h and release’ only. Best season for this excellent fly fishing is from the 25th December until 28th of February.
FLY FISHING TACKLE
For fly fishing for seatrout, brown trout and rainbow trout in Tierra del Fuego we recommend 10-11 ‘ foot Switch rods for lines #7-8 and suitable fly reels with good brakes. Single handed rod of 9-10’ for lines 6-8 will be also fine. Floating or sink tip WF lines or shooting heads are most used fly lines.
Popular fly patterns for Tierra del Fuego rivers and lakes are: Bunny Leeches, Zonkers, Woolly Buggers black, white, olive #6-8, Woolly worms in different colours #4-12, Girdle or Yuk Bug rubber legs #4-12, Bead head nymphs Prince, Hare’s Ear #10-14, Bomber, Green Butt or other waking dry flies #4-8. Only single or double hooks are allowed.
The accomodation for fly fishermen is in the lodge in twin rooms. The number of rods, howewer, may not exceed 6 licensed anglers. The estancia house has been totally renovated to the fishing lodge, allows anglers and guests to enjoy spacious rooms, large and fully appointed private bathrooms, a fine dining room. In the the lodge the guests will enjoy delicious local meals and drinks. All meals, beer, wine and drinks are included in the price. The guests will enjoy the outstanding quality of the service, food and accommodation at the lodge.
Unhosted or hosted Fishmaster fishing trips. For the hosted trips Jouni Rauha will work as a host for the group. Fly fishing trips to Chile, Tierra del Fuego will be arranged throughout the fishing season and the packages can be booked according to the client’s preferred dates. Anglers will take a flight to Santiago in Chile and continue with a domestic flight to Punta Arenas. You will possibly need to overnight in Punta Arenas before departing next day to the lodge in Tierra del Fuego. The guide will take you to the lodge by car. The lodge is located approximately 5 hours scenic car ride from Punta Arenas. After fishing week guide will take the anglers back to Punta Arenas.
