FLY FISHING – MEXICO, XCALAK
Fly fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon and Snook in Mexico, Xcalak which is a paradise of saltwater fly fishing. Fishmaster will arrange a hosted fly fishing trip to Mexico Xcalak on 30. November – 9. December 2024. Jouni Rauha will work as a host for this saltwater fly fishing trip. Xcalak is located in Southern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula 400 km south from Cancun close to Mexico and Belize border.
FLY FISHING
Xcalak area offers excellent saltwater fly fishing for permit. In addition there is a good chance for ‘Grand Slam’ (catching bonefish, permit and tarpon during same day). This huge area consists of several different type of flats; white sand, marl and turtle grass that can be waded and fished from boat as well. Fishing season is Year round and fly fishing can be done with single hand fly rods. There are not many tropical fishing places in the world which can offer as variable and good saltwater fly fishing as on Xcalak.
Bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, jacks and barracudas can be fished during the same day. Local fishing guide will take you by boat to different fly fishing places and show where and when to cast. They know the fishing places like their own hands and their english is adequate.
FLY FISHING TACKLE
We recommend 7 or 8 weight 9′ fly rod for bonefish and one 9 weight 9′ for permit. 10 weight 9′ fly rods are recommended for tarpon. High-performance reels with a good brake system are required, capable of holding 200 yards of 30-pound backing. For bonefish and permit we use knotless 270-330 cm tapered leaders with 0,33-0,36 mm tippet. For tarpon we use 40-60 pound test level fluorocarbon leader.
FLIES
Bonefish flies should be light-weight and with a hook protection. Clouser Minnow, Crazy Charlie, Bonefish Special and small crabs tied on hooks 4 or 6, sand and light-brown. Permit: Flexo Crab, Merkin Long arm, Mantis shrimp, tied on hooks 2, 4 and 6. Yellow eyed casa blanca raghead crab in all white and tan body 2-6. Red striped kukken 4-6. Floating crab size 4-6. Flies for tarpon and snook: Deceivers on hooks 1/0-2/0 light brown, black and red, black and purple, chartreuse and white.
ACCOMODATION
The guests will be accomodated at a nice ocean front fly fishing Lodge, located in Xcalak. Double bedrooms. Lodge has a wonderful restaurant and a full service bar. Dinners feature seafood, fresh fish, tropical fruits and vegetables. There is a WI-FI in the lodge.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Unhosted or hosted Fishmaster fishing trips. Fishing trips to Xcalak will be arranged throughout the year and the packages can be booked according to the client’s preferred dates subject to availability. Anglers take an international flight to Cancun and stay one night in a hotel in Cancun. Next day they will be taken to Xcalak with minivan. The car drive is 400 km and will take about 5 and half hours. After fishing week minivan will take anglers back to Cancun airport.
