NORWAY, NAMSEN FISKUMFOSS
Fly fishing for salmon on Namsen River in Mid-Norway. Fishmaster will arrange a hosted salmon fly fishing trip to the famous Fiskumfoss beat on Namsen on 1st – 6th June 2027. Jouni Rauha will work as a host for this trip. Fiskumfoss is a dream destination for a fly fisherman fishing from the bank or wading. It is an exceptional fishing beat, as the 34-meter-high Fiskumfossen waterfall acts as a natural barrier to migrating salmon. Although there is a fish ladder carved into the rock, a vast number of salmon ascending the Namsen River gather in the pools below the Fiskumfossen falls, pausing there to rest and wait.
NAMSEN RIVER
The Namsen River in Trøndelag, Norway—famously known as the “Queen of the Salmon Rivers”—is legendary for producing massive Atlantic salmon, with multi sea winter fish regularly tipping the scales at over 40 lbs (18 kg). At the heart of this legendary fishery is Fiskumfoss, a massive natural waterfall and a world-renowned beat that acts as a focal point for salmon running up the Namsen River system. Namsen is one of the three best salmon rivers in Norway and flows into the Namsenfjorden at Namsos, about 160 km north from Trondheim Vaernes airport.
FISKUMFOSS BEAT
Fiskumfoss – the ultimate holding pool: Historically Fiskumfoss was the absolute uppermost natural barrier for migrating salmon (though a salmon ladder was later engineered into the rock). Because running salmon stack up below this barrier waiting to pass, it forms a formidable, highly productive holding pool.
Fiskumfoss beat covers roughly a 900 meter stretch of the river, offering fishing on both banks with clearly marked boundaries. It is widely esteemed by fly fishers globally for its dramatic scenery, deep runs, and high concentrations of salmon.
The guests are fishing beautiful, private Fiskumfoss fishing beat located about 60 km from the Namsos town and estuary. The beat is about 1 km long and can be fished from both banks of the Namsen river. We will fly fish the Fiskumfoss beat in June with maksimum number of 8-9 anglers per week. Anglers will be divided into three rotation groups of 2-3 anglers each. The three beats are rotated among three groups according to a 3-4 hour rotation plan.
We will divide the Fiskumfoss area into 3 fishing beats. Beat 1 is below the waterfall, West bank, 400 m (Øvre odde, Nedre odde, Flatstein). Beat 2 is Lower West bank, 500 m (Fiskumlandet, Lisshøla, Storfeskhøla, Nervaldet). Beat 3 is East bank, length 900 m (Kastarplassen, Sandoddo, Kastarstein, Straumen, Kløvstein, Karihøla, Brekket, Heimerøya).
Fiskumfoss is one of the finest and most productive fishing beats on the Namsen River, with the best year in 2020 recorded catches of 397 salmon and 35 seatrout, total of 432 fish. The average catch in recent years from the Fiskumfoss beat is about 300 salmon and sea trout per season. In June 2024, Andreas Larsson caught and released a massive 124 cm / 21 kg salmon at Fiskumfoss beat.

FISHING SEASON
Fishing season on the Namsen River starts on the first of June. During the two first weeks of the season mostly big salmon enter the river weighing often 7-18 kg. At this time you have a good chance to hook and catch a salmon of your lifetime. During the early season water level is often high and water temperature is about 6-10 degrees. For these high and cold water conditions as fly lines we recommend Sink 3/5/8, sink 2/4/6, Sink 1/3/5 ja Float/S2/S4 shooting heads. In these conditions tube flies with 7-12 cm long wing are recommended.
By mid June the numbers of salmon in the River Namsen increase and in addition to big salmon there is often a good run of two sea winter salmon weighing 4-7 kg. The main run of salmon in Namsen River is from Late June to mid August, that period we can catch all sizes of salmon and the catch numbers per week are highest. During mid season the water level is often medium or low and water temperature is about 10-16 degrees. For these medium/low water conditions we recommend our guests to fish for example with Float/S2/S4, Float/Int/S2 ja Floating/Int shooting heads and tube flies with a wing length 3-7 cm.
During the last two weeks of August there are still some fresh salmon running but we also catch coloured salmon which have been in the river for a while – often very big ones. During late season the water level is often medium or low and water temperature is about 9-15 degrees. For these medium/low water conditions we recommend our guests to fish for example with Float/Int/S2, Float/Int and Floating shooting heads and tube flies with a wing length 3-5 cm. River Namsen fishing season ends on the last day of August.
