FLY FISHING – ARGENTINA, RIO GUANACO

Great new Fishmaster destination. Fly fishing for King Salmon on Rio Guanaco in Patagonia in Argentina. Fishmaster will arrange a hosted fly fishing trip to Rio Guanaco on 1st – 11th January 2027 (in destination 2nd-9th January). Rio Guanaco is a relatively new and very interesting King Salmon fishing destination. The 2024/2025 season was the first full fishing season on the Guanaco River, during which time anglers caught some great King Salmon from the river, weekly catches ranging from 15 to 35 King Salmon per group. The largest King Salmon caught on the Guanaco River have weighed over 27 kilos.

RIO GUANACO

Rio Guanaco is a small/ medium size, 15-25 m wide river. While the pools can be covered adequately with a single-handed rod, double-handers have become popular and deal with big King Salmon more efficiently. Pools are varied and interesting, ideal fly water.

There is always local fishing guide available per 2 fly anglers. Local fishing guide will take you by car to the river and show where to cast. They know the fishing places like their own hands and their english is adequate. Both single and double handed fly rods can be used on Rio Guanaco (AFTM class 8-9, rod length 9′-13′). Fly fishing is ‘catch and release’ only.

FLY FISHING TACKLE

For fly fishing for King Salmon on Rio Guanaco we recommend 12-13 ‘ feet double handed rods for lines #8-9 and suitable fly reels with good brakes. Single handed rod of 9-10’ for lines 8-9 will be also fine. Versi tip shooting heads and also skagit lines with 10-12 feet long intermediate, T-11 and T-14 tips work well here.

FLIES

Popular fly patterns for Rio Guanaco: Intruders in chartreuse/ blue, black/ blue, pink. Only single or double hooks are allowed.

ACCOMODATION

The accomodation for fly fishermen is in the La Sofia Lodge. The estancia house has been totally renovated to the fishing lodge, allows anglers and guests to enjoy spacious bedrooms, large and fully appointed private bathrooms, a warm and welcoming sitting lounge, and a dining room. In the dining room of the lodge the guests will enjoy delicious local meals. All meals, wine and beer is included in price. With 24/7 electricity and internet access, you will stay connected while enjoying the wilderness.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

Hosted Fishmaster fishing trips. Jouni Rauha will travel with as a host. Anglers will take a flight to Buenos Aires and continue with domestic flight to El Calafate. Guides will pick you up at airport and take you to the lodge by car, it is about 2 hours car drive to the Rio Guanaco destination. After fishing week guides will take anglers back to El Calafate airport and they will continue with domestic flight to Buenos Aires. You will likely need to overnight in Buenos Aires before departing to your international flight.
