Lower Stora Laxa beat is over 40 km long and offers 60 marked pools for 6 rods and has a great variety of pools. Fast rocky pools and canyons and further down it goes, the river opens up on to gorgeous meadows with slower cutback pools. Lower Stora Laxa is mostly easily accessible and suits any angler. Stóra Laxá most productive pools are located on this beat. Lower Stora Laxa anglers will be accomodated in the lodge.

Upper Stora Laxa – Canyon beat is over 20 km long and offers around 50 various pools for 4 rods, everything from short fast runs to big slow pools. This Is without a doubt one of the most stunning salmon beats in the world. Stóra Laxá Canyon beat runs gin clear through rough canyons in the highland plains. In August-September Upper Stora Laxa anglers will be accomodated in the large self catering cottage close the beat.

New for 2027: Big change is that we will fish the whole river in June-July on 8 rods only from the Lower Stora Laxa lodge.

Rod sharing is permitted, so two anglers can share one rod, but only one can fish at any one time. Rod sharing is an excellent way of reducing costs and making the trip even more cost-effective. Daily fishing hours are from 8.00 until 13.00 and again from 16.00 to 22.00 or from 15-21 after August 16th. The fishing season is from June 21. until September 30. All caught salmon must be released and only fly fishing is allowed.

Good salmon flies for the Stora Laxa River are for example Blue & Black, Black Sheep, Silver Sheep, Frances, Snaelda, Blue Charm, Sunray Shadow.

FLY FISHING TACKLE

For fly fishing for salmon on the Stora Laxa we recommend 12-13′ feet double handed fly rods for lines 7-9 or alternatively 9-10′ single handed fly rods for lines 7-8 and suitable fly reels with good quality brakes. Floating, sink tip shooting heads are most used fly lines. It is mandatory to have your fishing gear disinfected on arrival at Keflavík international airport. Another option is to get your gear disinfected at the Stora Laxa lodge on arrival.

ACCOMODATION

At the new Stora Laxa full service fishing lodge there are fine bedrooms with private bathrooms. The lounge, bar and dining room at the lodge have recently been built and there is also jacuzzi in the lodge. All meals in the lodge are included in the price. The first meal is dinner on the day of arrival and the last meal is lunch on the day of departure. Anglers can arrive to the lodge after 14:00 on the first day of fishing and need to leave at 12:00 on the last day.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

Guests will take an interational flight to Reykjavik, Keflavik airport and continue with rental car to the Stora Laxa River. It’s about 1 hour 30 minutes driving from Keflavik airport to the Stora Laxa.
