FLY FISHING – USA, OLYMPIC PENINSULA

Fishmaster fly fishing trips to the USA, Olympic Peninsula – Fly fishing for big winter steelhead on Bogachiel, Hoh, Sol Duc and Queets rivers. We fly fish for world record steelhead on trophy waters. We feature the Bogachiel, Hoh, Sol Duc and Queets rivers. Big, wild winter steelhead are at the heart of what makes the rivers of this area so special.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA

The Olympic Peninsula is the large arm of land in the northwestern Washington state of the USA. It is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the east by Hood Canal. In the centre of peninsula lies the huge Olympic National park. The Olympic mountain range sits in the center of the peninsula. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus at 2432 m.

FLY FISHING

Fishing on the Bogachiel, Hoh, Sol Duc and Queets rivers will be done with fly fishing gear and mostly by wading. The rivers are medium size and about 15-50 m wide and can be covered well with 12-14 feet long double handed fly rod. We have always one local fishing guide per 2 fly fishermen. Local fishing guide will take you by car and drift boat to the river and show where to cast. They know the fishing places like their own hands and their english is adequate. Fishing is ‘catch and release’ only. The average size of wild winter steelhead is 4-5 kg but you have good chances to catch a monster steelhead over 10 kg, even up to 15 kg. Our morning begins with a 5.30 wake-up call with a breakfast ready by 6. Anglers are geared up and off to the river by 6.30. It is very stealthy and each pool is covered with maximum 2 anglers. By noon we have fished 2-3 pools/runs. We will have a lunch by the river. We finish the late afternoon after another 2-3 pools/runs and try to be back at the lodge by 17-18. Evening dinner at the lodge at 20. After dinner guests can enjoy the comforts of the lodge. By 22-23 time most anglers are ready for bed.

FLY FISHING TACKLE

For avid fly anglers we do recommend that you bring at least two rods. The rivers are excellent spey casting rivers as many pools are sidelined with overhanging trees, while the lower sections and other streams trees are not as close to the shoreline. Rod selection for Steelhead are 8-9 wt double handed fly rods 12-14 ft long. Suggestion for reels should be large arbor with good disc drag including minimum of 200 m 30 lbs backing. When it comes to fly fishing lines a skagit or connect system with a 10-15′ long multi-tip is recommended. Sink tips we use are type S3-T17. The most used tip is T-10. Use monofilament line for tippet, we recommend 0,35-40 mm 1-2 m long.

FLIES

Fly selection we recommend are hairwing patterns, leeches in a variety of color. For example Intruder, Leech, Woolly Bugger, Egg Sucking Leech, Popscicle. Colours black/purple, black/red, black/blue, purple, pink, orange. Typical fly size is 6-8 cm. We recommend using single hooks, some fishing areas allow only single hooks.
