FLY FISHING – SCOTLAND, SPEY
Fly fishing trips to one of the most famous salmon river in the world, the Spey in Scotland. Fishmaster will arrange a hosted fly fishing trip to the Spey, Tulchan beats on 16th-23rd April 2023. The destination will be the famous Tulchan A / B beat in the middle part of the Spey. April-May is prime spring fly fishing time on the Spey. The host of this fly fishing trip will be Jouni Rauha.
The Spey is located in the north-east of Scotland and it is the second longest and the fastest flowing river in Scotland. It is very famous and one of Scotland’s big four salmon rivers. The Spey is well known for its early run salmon and there is good spring fishing season from March until the end of May. The Spey is a very beautiful river which suits excellent for fly fishing. The spring fishing on the river Spey is catch and release only.
FLY FISHING – TULCHAN
Our fly fishing group will fish the Tulchan A/B beat on the middle Spey. Both Tulchan A and B beats are both about 2 miles (3,0 km) of superb double bank fly water in stunning surroundings restricted to 6 rods each. Our group of 6 persons will fly fish Tulchan B beat on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday and Thursday our group will fly fish Tulchan A beat. The Tulchan Water on the River Spey is part of an idyllic lanscape some 30 km upstream from the mouth of the River. Part of the stunning scenery of the Spey valley, the Tulchan Water is one of the more prolific beats on the Spey in numbers of fish caught, and in size, such that this stretch of one of the premier Scottish rivers is part of many an angler’s ambition. There is comfortable fishing hut with toilet and cooking facilities on each beat. Fishers are accompanied on the river by a full time ghillie and the Tulchan A and B beats are both fished by 6 anglers at a time.
FLY FISHING TACKLE
For fly fishing for salmon on the Spey we recommend 12-15 ‘ feet double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality disc brakes. Floating, sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used fly lines but please bring also medium sinking fly line or shooting head for possible high water conditions.
Good fly patterns for the Spey are: Black Sheep, Dee Sheep, Black & Yellow, Willie Gunn, Munro Killer, Thunder & Lightning, Allys Shrimp, Frances, Monkey Fly, Garry and Cascade.
Accomodation for group will be in a large Knocktulchan Lodge, within a short driving distance to the Tulchan beats. Knocktulchan is a traditional Scottish farmhouse of substantial size, now fully modernised in old style luxury. This impressive building still retains many of its original features and boasts six en-suite bedrooms, a large dining room, a large traditional kitchen and a sizeable lounge with open log fireplace. We will cook the meals together in accomodation.
Fishing trips to the Spey, Tulchan are always hosted trips. Anglers will take a flight to Aberdeen. At the airport they will meet host Jouni Rauha and continue to the Spey with a rental car, it is about 1,5 hours drive.
