Scotland, Spey

Fly fishing trips to one of the most famous salmon river in the world, the Spey in Scotland. Fishmaster will arrange a hosted fly fishing trip to the Spey, Orton beat on 12th-19th April 2020. The destination will be the famous Orton Beat in the lower part of the Spey. April-May is prime spring fly fishing time on the Spey. The host of this trip will be Jouni Rauha.

The Spey is located in the north-east of Scotland and it is the second longest and the fastest flowing river in Scotland. It is very famous and one of Scotland’s big four salmon rivers. The Spey is well known for its early run salmon and there is good spring fishing season from March until the end of May. The Spey is a very beautiful river which suits excellently for fly fishing. The spring fishing on the river Spey is catch and release only.

Our fly fishing group will fish the Orton Beat on the lower Spey. The beat is about 2 miles (3,2 km) of superb double bank fly water in stunning surroundings restricted to 6 rods. The Orton Water on the River Spey is part of an idyllic rural setting some 12 km upstream from the mouth of the River. Part of the stunning scenery of the Spey valley, the Orton Water is one of the more prolific beats on the Spey in numbers of fish caught, and in size, such that this stretch of one of the premier Scottish rivers is part of many an angler’s ambition.

The Orton fishing is from both banks of the river in 11 named pools on 2 beats. Beat One comprises of the House, Willows, Couperee and Wood Pools. Beat Two encompasses Upper Cairnty, Lower Cairnty, Arns, Island Point, Island Stream, Wee and New Pools. There are 2 comfortable fishing huts with toilet and cooking facilities. Fishers are accompanied on the river by 2 full time ghillies and the beats are booked exclusively for our Fishmaster fishing group.

For fly fishing for salmon on the Spey we recommend 12-15 ‘ feet double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality disc brakes. Floating, sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used fly lines but please bring also medium sinking fly line or shooting head for possible high water conditions.

Good fly patterns for the Spey are: Black Sheep, Dee Sheep, Black & Yellow, Willie Gunn, Munro Killer, Thunder & Lightning, Allys Shrimp, Frances, Monkey Fly, Garry and Cascade.

Accomodation for group will be in a large Garbity Farmhouse, within a walking distance to the Orton beat. Garbity Farmhouse is a traditional Scottish farmhouse of substantial size, now fully modernised and capable of sleeping up to fourteen guests in old style luxury. Dating back to the 1850s, this impressive building still retains many of its original features and boasts six en-suite double bedrooms plus two extra single bedrooms, a large dining room, a large traditional farmhouse kitchen, breakfast room/playroom and a sizeable lounge with open log fireplace. We will cook the meals together in accomodation.

Fishing trips to the Spey, Orton are always hosted trips. Anglers will take a flight to Aberdeen. At the airport they will meet host Jouni Rauha and continue to the Spey with a rental car, it is about 1,5 hours drive.
