FLY FISHING – NORWAY, SULDALSLÅGEN

Fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon on Suldalslågen River in Western Norway. Fishmaster will arrange fly fishing trips to the Stråpa beat. Suldalslågen is the largest and one of the best salmon rivers in Southwestern Norway. Suldalslågen is famous for very big salmon, the biggest ones are over 20 kilos.

SULDALSLÅGEN

The Suldalslågen is a famous salmon river that is located in the municipality of Suldal in Rogaland county. The 22 km long river runs from the lake Suldalsvatnet to the southwest to the village of Sand where it empties into the Sandsfjorden. The average size of salmon is very high 6-7 kg. Suldalslågen is very late river considering salmon run timing. The fishing season in middle and upper river starts on 20. July and ends on 30. September. Prime time for salmon fishing on this beautiful river is in August-September.

FLY FISHING

We will fly fish the beautiful, private Stråpa beat situated in the upper part of Suldalslågen River, about 21 km from the sea. Stråpa beat is uppermost beat of the Suldalslågen. It consists of 1,3 km of South (Left) bank and 0,7 km of North (Right) bank of famous River Suldalslågen. Stråpa beat consists three good salmon pools: Strengjen, Flotto and Notahölen. Our Fishmaster group of 4 persons will fly fish exclusively Stråpa beat. Fishing begins on Wednesday at 18:00 and ends next Tuesday at 18:00. Check in for accomodation is at 15:00 on Wednesday and check out is 10:00 on next Wednesday morning.

FISHING RULES

Bag limit is two killed salmon per person per day. Only one wild salmon can be killed per person per day. If someone kills two salmon in a day, he must stop fishing until midnight. Released salmon is not counted on quotas. All wild female salmon over 75 cm must be released. All seatrout must be released.

FLY FISHING TACKLE

For fly fishing salmon on River Suldalslågen we recommend 13-15 ‘ double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality brakes. Sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most popular fly lines but please take also with sinking shooting heads for possible high water conditions.

DISINFECTION

Disinfection of fishing gear. Before fishing starts everyone must disinfect fishing gear and buy a Norwegian state license. State license can be bought before the trip from internet.

FLIES

Good fly patterns for Suldalslågen are for example Allys Shrimp, Frances, Green Butt, Red Butt, Black Sheep, Greenlander, Black & Yellow, Black & Orange, Willie Gunn, Monkey and Sunray Shadow.

ACCOMODATION

Accomodation for guests is arranged in a renovated old house located in Suldalsåsen, close to Stråpa fishing beat. It is only 300 m short walk from the house to the beat. There is a living room, a well equipped kitchen, 5 bedrooms, 2 x toilet/shower. Every angler will have a single bedroom. Guests can cook the meals in a self catering kitchen.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

Anglers will take flight or car transport to Norway. The closest airport can be found in Stavanger. It is 123 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes driving from Stavanger to the Suldalslågen including 14,5 km long tunnel under fjord and one ferry trip. Another option is to take a flight to Oslo and drive to Suldalslågen through a stunning mountain road of 407 km/6 hours drive.
