Resrapport – Gaula Flyfishing 1-10.6.2017

Gaula season 2017 opening period of 9 days went with variable and challenging weather and water conditions. Water level at Gaulfossen gauge was at lowest 170 cubics and at highest 560 cubics per second and water temperature was 4-7 degrees.

Total of 21 salmon were caught at our Gaula Flyfishing Lodge beats. Three biggest salmon were caught by Per Westerlund: 118 cm/17,5 kg, by Pekka Karkkolainen: 115 cm/15,2 kg, both at beat 5 - Evjen pool and by Teemu Venejärvi: 117 cm/13,9 kg at Röskaft pool. Per also caught two more salmon: 13,4 kg and 8,7 kg. Pekka caught another salmon of 8,4 kg and also Teemu had another salmon of 7 kg. Lodge manager Jouni Rauha spent also time by the river and managed to catch and release 3 salmon: 8,4 kg, 8,7 kg and 9,3 kg.

The most successful flies were big tube flies: Willie Gunn, Monkey and Sunray with an orange or yellow/orange underwing. The shooting heads we used depending of the conditions were: sink 1/3/5, sink 2/4/6, sink 4/5, sink 6/7, 750 grain and 850 grain fast sinking fly lines.
